Placenta Encapsulation in SoCal: Everything You Need to Know
Placenta encapsulation is the process of steaming, dehydrating, and grinding the placenta into a fine powder, which is then placed into capsules for consumption. It's a practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used for centuries to support postpartum recovery.
When prepared by a trained professional following strict safety and hygiene protocols, placenta encapsulation is considered safe. We follow OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards, use hospital-grade sanitization, and maintain a dedicated preparation space. We are certified and insured.
Many birthing people report increased energy, improved mood stability, enhanced milk supply, reduced postpartum bleeding, and a smoother overall recovery. While scientific studies are ongoing, the anecdotal evidence and traditional use spanning centuries is significant.
Traditional preparation involves steaming the placenta (often with herbs) before dehydrating and encapsulating. This method is rooted in TCM principles. Raw preparation skips the steaming step — the placenta is sliced and dehydrated at a low temperature. Some believe this preserves more nutrients. Raw capsules must be refrigerated and used within a shorter window.
We aim to pick up your placenta within 24 hours of birth. In most cases, we can collect the same day. Your birth team will place the placenta in a container (we provide instructions beforehand), and we coordinate pickup directly with you or your support person.
The placenta should be placed in a sealed container or double-bagged and refrigerated as soon as possible after birth. We will provide you with a storage kit and detailed instructions before your due date. Please do not freeze the placenta unless we specifically instruct you to.
The full process typically takes 24–48 hours from pickup. This includes inspection, steaming (for traditional method), dehydrating, grinding, and encapsulating. We deliver the finished capsules to your door along with your keepsakes.
The number varies based on the size of your placenta, but most people receive between 100–200 capsules. This typically provides a 4–8 week supply when following our recommended dosage guidelines, which we include with your capsules.
The Birthroot Tincture is a concentrated liquid extract made from a small piece of your placenta preserved in high-proof, food-grade alcohol. Unlike capsules which are used within weeks, the tincture can last for years and is taken by dropper. Many people use it during times of stress, illness, hormonal transitions, or emotional difficulty.
We offer umbilical cord keepsakes (shaped into hearts, stars, or spirals with optional initials), placenta prints (the 'tree of life' artwork made from your placenta), and archival-quality posters. These are included or available as add-ons depending on your package. You'll customize these through your client portal after booking.
Our primary service area is San Diego County, including all neighborhoods, hospitals, and birth centers within the region. If you're located just outside our standard area, please reach out — we're happy to discuss options.
We accept all major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and buy-now-pay-later options including Affirm, Klarna, and Afterpay. We also accept USDC cryptocurrency. Payment is collected at the time of booking.
